IN a case of mistaken identity police have shot and killed a woman and wounded two occupants of a car they mistook for one that was hijacked in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria.
Olga Kekana, 29, of Stinkwater in North West, was shot in the back of the head yesterday when officers from three different police units chased a wrong car in Mabopane.
A 31-year-old woman was hit twice in the abdomen while another occupant 28- year-old man was shot in the left arm and leg. Both were receiving treatment at George Mukhari Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa.
The driver of the car, who was also said to be a pilot of the South African Air force, escaped unharmed .
The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) is investigating a charge of murder and three of attempted murder against the police.
ICD spokesperson Moses Dlamini said yesterday they received a call about the shooting incident and on arrival at the scene, members were told that a hijacked grey Toyota Conquest was tracked to a nearby filling station in Mabopane. He said on arrival at the scene, members found the dead woman and the other injured occupants.
Dlamini said according to the driver of the Conquest “he stopped and tried to get out of the car to see why he was being stopped. Suddenly shots were fired at his vehicle from the direction of the police”.
His statement differed from that of the police who claimed that shots were fired at the car after the driver failed to stop.
Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Captain Julia Claassen said police rushed to the area after receiving information that the car was tracked to Block CV, Mabopane where they spotted a car fitting the description.
Claassen said the driver of the Conquest failed to stop when police instructed him to do so. They then gave chase before opening fire.
Ministry of Police spokesperson Zweli Mnisi yesterday declined to comment on the incident saying it was being probed by ICD.
The position of the Ministry of Police, in terms of Section 49 of the Criminal Act, “is that the amendments are not intended to encourage trigger happy police officers”.
