Gautrain experienced a historic moment on a rainy February afternoon, as they welcomed 150 guests to travel on the three-kilometre test track at the Midrand Depot.
The guests experienced a glimpse of Gautrain’s world class features during a quick smooth and comfortable ride on the first completed four-car train set which arrived from Derby, UK in December 2008.

This train set has been subjected to long and rigorous testing on all systems from brakes and power, to air-conditioning and communications. Each train-set will complete approximately 3000km on the test-track before being certified for operation. The testing process will be followed by trial runs which will include verification of time tables, training of personnel, disaster and emergency simulations conducted in conjunction with Gauteng’s emergency services.
Once the Gautrain system is fully operational it will be complemented by a dedicated fleet of 125 buses. These buses will transport passengers between surrounding suburbs, business areas and stations.
