Federer tops ATP rankings


CLOSING IN ON RECORD : World No 1 tennis player Roger Federer

PARIS – Roger Federer has topped the ATP end-of-year world rankings for the fifth time in his career, having ceded the position last year to Rafael Nadal.

The 28-year-old Swiss star, who won the French Open and Wimbledon during the summer, was world No 1 from 2004 to 2007 and is now level with Jimmy Connors and one behind the all- time best set by Pete Sampras from 1993 to 1998.

Federer has also topped the rankings for 259 weeks and is closing in on the record of 286 weeks held by Sampras.

The ATP world rankings released yesterday:

MEN – 1. Federer (10550 points), 2. Nadal (9205), 3. Novak Djokovic (8310), 4. Andy Murray (7030), 5. Juan Martin Del Potro (6785), 6. Nikolay Davydenko (4930), 7. Andy Roddick (4410), 8. Robin Soderling (3410), 9. Fernando Verdasco (3300), 10. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2875). Serena Williams also retained her No 1 spot in the women’s division. Dinara Safina remains second in the standings.

WOMEN – 1. Serena Williams (9075), 2. Safina (7800), 3. Svetlana Kuznetsova (6141), 4. Caroline Wozniacki (5875), 5. Elena Dementieva (5585), 6. Venus Williams (5126), 7. Victoria Azarenka (4820), 8. Jelena Jankovic (3965), 9. Vera Zvonareva (3560) and 10. Agnieszka Radwanska (3450). – AFP
