Sleeping in the open

Nokubonga Dlamini and her three-month-old baby have spent the past two nights sleeping out in the open.
Dlamini and hundreds of other people were evicted from a block of flats in downtown Johannesburg on Monday.
By yesterday about 20 people were still outside the old Monis Mansions in Harrison Street. Some people, including Dlamini, had made makeshift tents with mattresses, base sets and sheets.
The rest of the people who were evicted had found accommodation with their families.
Sowetan spoke to Dlamini yesterday. She said: “ I have nowhere to go. It’ s not safe here, especially at night.
“I’m trying to find another home for me and my baby, but until then we have to stay here.”
After the eviction on Monday, hundreds of residents scrambled frantically through piles of damaged goods trying to salvage what they could.
The Red Ants and the Metro police came knocking at about 5am on Monday with a court order to evict all the people living in the building.
Johannesburg central deputy sheriff, James Calitz, said the eviction notice had been granted by the high court and had given residents until February 28 to vacate the building.
