At the start of each year, it is normal and expected for people to create a list of goals they commit to.

Siyavutha Property Stokvel was formed in 2021 and is aimed at addressing economic transformation by enabling ordinary members of the community to unite and invest in commercial real estate.

Makawana Farmers Stokvel was formed in 2017 as a platform for young farmers to support one another. The stokvel, based in Kuruman, Northern Cape, initially served to address the dire after-effects of the drought which the province experienced in 2016.

Roadtrippers Stokvel was formed in 2012 with the purpose of encouraging travel and making it more accessible.

HOPE (which stands for “Helping Our People Exceed”) was formed in 2018 by property investor Bontle Zweni. The main aim of the stokvel is to enable disadvantaged and financially excluded people to own land and property.

Stokvel Academy is a platform built in 2013 out of frustration with profit-driven corporate companies and has  become a programme to educate and empower stokvels of different kinds.

With wealth in mind, hope in their hearts and R50 notes in their hands, social media users from all across SA came together and joined in on the idea. Today, Kopano Collective has just over 1,200 members.

When Nompumelelo Thwane joined Aziwe Ladies’ Stokvel five years ago, she had no idea just how impactful it would be for her and her family. “After joining, I saw a huge difference. In December, I no longer have to stress too much about things such as flour, rice, sugar and washing powder,” she said.

For many years, stokvels have served as a helpful savings tool for our people. However, due to them existing informally in the past, the industry’s regulatory aspect consists of some grey areas.
