Media personality Boity Thulo’s enchanting and alluring beauty secrets can now be found in her signature fragrance – to make a statement like her, all your need is a “fah fah” spritz on the neck.
With Boity Pink Sapphire, she joins an elite few – Connie Ferguson, Nonhle Thema and Gert-Johan Coetzee – to locally launch celebrity fragrances.
The 30-year-old star collaborated with local cosmetic manufacturer Halo Heritage to bring the scent to life.
Yesterday, Thulo gave Sowetan a waft of the perfume at the picturesque Mansion House nestled in Westcliff, Johannesburg.
She said they have been working on the scent for a year and for her it was all about “taking up space”, echoing the words of Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi.
“This is bigger than me; it’s about an African black woman who is doing something that’s completely out of the comfort zone of what people expect us to do,” Thulo said.
“It’s just a story of inspiration and I hope that’s how people receive it. Taking up space is what it’s all about.
“For me, when I was approached it was mind-blowing and I didn’t have to think twice. It reminded me that the universe is always listening even if it’s just a small thought.”
Thulo said the perfume balances floral and mineral notes and was appropriate for any occasion.
“Honey, you are wearing it all the damn time! It’s for every single occasion,” she said.
“The smell is just enough because sometimes there are some fragrances that might be overpowering at a certain time of the day.”
Inge Peacock, CEO of Halo Heritage, said: “Pink Sapphire embodies her bubbly and joyous personality –she’s elegant yet approachable, down-to-earth but sophisticated.
“Together we created a signature scent that’s fit for the sensual, feminine, multifaceted woman who is in charge of her destiny.”
Some of her naysayers have already criticised the fragrance for being pricey (R1,495 for 100ml), but Thulo defended it.
“We had to think a lot about the pricing from the trailer packaging to the love, effort and money that was put into it,” Thulo said.
“Obviously not everyone is going to afford it, but we considered everything that went into it and we felt like it was fair pricing.”
Rocking a pink cleavage-hugging top and a turquoise miniskirt, Thulo debuted a slimmed-down figure.
She said that through fasting and working out during the Covid-19 lockdown she used the time to get fit.
“I let myself go before the lockdown and it was bad. So for me, the lockdown was like 'you have no excuses and nowhere to go'. So, I started working out and lost weight. I was very big,” Thulo said.
