Gomora has reclaimed the top spot as pay broadcaster DStv’s most-watched TV show for the first time since it dethroned The Queen back in April.
The Mzansi Magic telenovela was watched by 1.14-million viewers on Tuesday September 22, according to the latest data by the Broadcast Research Council of SA.
The episode saw sparks beginning to fly between Teddy (Sicelo Buthelezi) and Buhle (Ama Qamata), which fans of the show have been begging for.
The show managed to beat the viewership of The Queen (1.10-million) and Idols SA (900,614).
Gomora also benefitted from Uyajola 9/9 coming to an end in August. The Moja Love reality show has held the top spot on DStv for four straight months since May.
“Having the audiences journey with us with such loyalty has been a tremendous blessings. This cast and crew have devoted their lives to the success of Gomora,” said producer Lulu Hela.
“Seeing our audiences respond to the stories with such engagement and conviction only makes us want to do better. We will continue crafting stories that are riveting and relatable, that’s what our audiences keep coming back for.”
Gomora, with Connie Chiume, Katlego Danke and Thembi Seete, surged to the top (2.51-million viewers) in its debut month in April, upsetting The Queen.
But the national lockdown forced the show to go off air around the same time and the show struggled to reclaim the top spot on its return a month later.
“Our biggest concern during that month-long on-air hiatus was really about how we would get to return to work safely, given the pandemic,” Hela said.
“We were hopeful that the audiences would watch the show on its return, because of the overwhelmingly positive response the first 20 episodes received. “If anything, the hiatus gave our audiences something to look forward to, as they couldn’t wait to have Gomora back on air.”
Despite being the most-watched show, Gomora and a number of shows on DStv showed an alarming drop from the month before.
In August the top four most-watched shows were Uyajola 9/9 (1.56-million viewers), The Queen (1.54-million viewers), Gomora (1.46-million viewers) and Idols SA (1.17-million viewers).
SABC1 soapie Uzalo remains the most-watched show in the country with a viewership of 8.94-million.
