Few line-up changes ahead of new radio calender

DJ Sabby is exiting YFM after 10 years, while Mantsoe Pout and Msizi James will depart from 947 and 5FM, respectively.

DJ Sabby is exiting YFM after 10 years, while Mantsoe Pout and Msizi James will depart from 947 and 5FM, respectively.

These are just some of the early line-up changes as the new radio calendar is set to launch next month.

On March 26, DJ Sabby will hang up his mic as the host of The Best Drive – ending his five-year run.

DJ Sabby joined YFM in April 2010 through the Y-Academy radio training programme. He never looked back after he was offered a trainee slot and traffic reporter position in October of the year.

“I found my voice on YFM and I got to harness my skills and perfect my craft to what it is today.

“I truly had an organic growth within the YFM umbrella and for me that’s genuinely one thing I loved about the space because every year I could point out my growth and work on my weaknesses,” DJ Sabby said.

He has confirmed that he’s moving to a new undisclosed radio station.

“I’m so excited and nervous at the same time. The butterflies in my stomach are louder at this moment and that’s the feeling that keeps me going because once it goes off – I’d be scared,” DJ Sabby said.

“I’m excited to meet new people, a new team to rep, introduce myself to new listeners and grow in spaces that I am not familiar with at the moment, but most importantly to engage in new ideas with a different approach to my current template.”

Mantsoe Pout, who joined 947 in 2016, hosted the afternoon drive show with ousted DJ Fresh. Former 5FM broadcaster Thando Thabethe will join forces with Alex Caige, taking over the 3pm to 7pm timeslot on the station.

“I am really excited to be returning to radio and to have been approached by Joburg’s coolest frequency, 947 – is just fantastic. I have always loved the radio as a medium to genuinely connect with people through music and conversation,” Thabethe said.

“I believe that music is a true leveler, bringing people together in a place and time that is just about what they are hearing and how it makes them feel. I can’t wait to get behind the mic and contribute to our 947 audience’s listening experience.”

Thabethe’s former 5FM afternoon drive co-host Msizi James is departing the station this week.

James was currently hosting the 9am to 12pm timeslot weekdays with Stephanie B.

“Four years ago Grant Nash called me and changed my life forever. Leaving Durban to follow my dreams in the big city was the best thing I’ve ever done,” James wrote on Instagram.

“I will forever be grateful for the things I’ve learned and the people I’ve met along the way. From joining the Thabooty Drive to hosting the Top 40 and even my own weekday, daytime show.”

Other noticeable changes in recent weeks include Proverb, Khaya Sithole and Dr Sindi van Zyl leaving Kaya FM. Van Zyl, who joined the station in 2019, is taking time off to focus on her health; while Sithole has moved to Power FM.
