The SA Film and Television Awards’ (Saftas) newly introduced online category, giving recognition to YouTube, Instagram and Facebook content producers, has proven to be a hit after garnering the highest submissions.

The new category, best online content award, opened to directors and producers of online series or stand-alone content, has received a total of 40 valid online submissions.

According to auditors, a total of 402 entries, up from last year’s total of 205, have been recorded for the 15th instalment of the awards across the various Saftas categories divided into feature film, entertainment, online content, made for TV documentary, soapie/telenovela, variety, structured soapie reality, best structured/docu-reality as well as natural history/environment.

“We are pleased with the response to this new category as it is proof that our industry has quickly adapted to global trends,” said Janet van Eeden, Saftas co-overall chair.

“We are also pleased to be where were are with the planning for Saftas 15 given the very many disruptions to the industry.”

Two other new categories delivered impressive numbers of entries.

The category best made for TV documentary award received 14 submissions.

The category best structured soapie reality award, nodding real-life programmes that are character-driven and blending elements of a soap and reality genre, saw 11 submissions for judging.

The judging process for the Saftas are now under way until April 9. The judging panel consists of 213 film and television players — 113 female.

The judging panel is chaired by award-winning film producer Bongiwe Selane and celebrated screenwriter Van Eeden.

The nominees will be revealed on April 29, with the winners announced on May 22.

“We are excited about the appointment of highly acclaimed executive producer, Anneke de Ridder, joining us as the executive producer,” said Makhosazana Khanyile, CEO of organisers, National Film and Video Foundation.
