Food and music are two things that have always united South Africans and on Friday they will “meat” again.
In celebration of Heritage Day, some of SA’s favourite artists have collaborated with Deezer to curate playlists that celebrate the country’s diversity and culture through music.
The Heritage Day collections comprise nine artist-curated music playlists including Zahara, Kurt Darren, Kid X, Oskido, Deborah Fraser, Nduduzo Makhathini, Khuzani, Mafikizolo and the Springbok Nude Girls.
Sotiris Moldovanos, Deezer’s music editor for Africa, said the playlists aimed to celebrate the many facets of SA culture and allow people to share their musical traditions with others.
“Our Heritage Day collection embodies who we are as a rainbow nation.
“Each featured artist represents the local sounds that make SA so unique,” Moldovanos said.
“Whether you want to take a trip down memory lane with familiar classics or discover new and exciting favourites, there’s a track for just about anyone.”
Bonginkosi Mahlangu, or Kid X, as he is better known, said Heritage Day meant acknowledging and celebrating his rich and colourful cultural background.
“My playlist reflects SA’s heritage by including records from a wide range of artists and music that I was exposed to while growing up,” the Mtan ’Omuntu hitmaker said.
“This is what laid the foundation for the music that I gravitate towards today.”
The collection features a variety of genres, including Afro-soul, Afrikaans, hip-hop, gospel, dance, jazz, maskandi, pop, rock and others.
The collection is exclusively available on the Deezer platform.
