SABC1 launches a brand new show, Roxic that is set to deal with dysfunctionality and toxicity in families.
Roxic will be hosted by Dr Better, whose real name is Nkululeko Mhlongo, and is one of the six shows that were launched on Tuesday by the channel. Other shows include Clover Classic Celebrations that will be presented by Thembisa Mdoda; Side Dish season two; Ses’ Top La season five; Makoti season two; and Dance Yodumo season one presented by Ntando Duma.
Roxic will premiere on SABC1 on April 5 at 6pm.
Speaking to Sowetan, Dr Better, a practising psychologist and PhD candidate, has promised viewers an interesting show that will educate the country. Ten episodes have been shot so far in different provinces where he helps to resolve issues between families.
“We combined two words, toxic and relationship, and came up with the name. People write to us about toxic situations in their lives and we come in, dealing with that situation. I know that such a show is going to educate and empower a lot of people who will be watching. The show is definitely going to open the minds of a lot of South Africans and force them to speak and address these issues in their families.”
Dr Better, who got the name from his patients, said through the show he had discovered that the common thing in families was a lack of accountability and truth from old people.
“I have realised that senior or old people do not want to account and don’t want to be questioned on their mistakes. There are also toxic traits in many families that even a child can grow into and practice them when he or she is older. I discovered a lot of dishonesty and secrets in black families.
“We also realised that favouritism exists in many families. First borns and last borns are allowed to get away with things. Sometimes they will say it is this home’s culture. We need to move on because culture is dynamic and is forever changing, and old people do not want to hear that,” said the 31-year-old.
Meanwhile, the channel has brought back Makoti for season two. The show starts on April 11, with Thulisile Phongolo playing the role of Lilitha. New faces include Sdumo Mtshali, who takes over from Siphesihle Vazi. Ses’Top La viewers will see new faces such as Madluphuthu and Nelisa Mchunu, who used to play Fikile in Uzalo. The comedy show returns on April 14 and will be flighted two days a week.
