Afro-pop rising star Nomfundo Moh has been named Equal Africa Ambassador for the month of April by global streaming giant Spotify.
Moh, who was born Nomfundo Ngcobo, joins other African women artists such as DBN Gogo, Fave (from Nigeria) and Rhita Nattah (from Morocco) who are already part of Equal programme that fosters gender equality and provides a platform to celebrate influential female artists in Africa.
According to Spotify, the programme, which consists of highlighted playlists created and marketed by Spotify, was launched to highlight female artists on its platform and celebrate them.
Moh’s latest achievement comes after being named Apple Africa Rising emerging artist last month. The video of her single Phakade Lami, which features award-winning Ami Faku and Sha Sha, has reached 8.5m views on YouTube.
The 22-year-old who released her debut album Amagama in January believes that being selected to be part of Equal Africa will open more opportunities both locally and internationally for her.
“It is an amazing feeling to be part of the programme. Being added in the programme of ambassador for the month of April means that Spotify will shine the spotlight on me and spread my music all over the globe. My music will be available on different playlists, including Billboard. They will also facilitate international interviews for me to promote my music. This means that my music will reach a wider audience,” she said.
“Being part of Spotify’s Equal programme actually shows me that my talent, as a woman, is recognised and that there are people who are willing to help me. People who see my vision and ambition and people who want to put me on greater heights.”
Asked if the recent achievements were not putting her under pressure as her career has just started, the shy and soft-spoken singer said: “It is not putting me under pressure because it is something that I have always wanted.
“Music is about gift and luck at the same time. I thank God that I have both. This is a great opportunity for me and it will encourage other artists to know that this is possible if you work hard. This will benefit my career by taking my brand to another level.”
Spotify’s head of music for sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu, said: “We are proud to welcome a talent such as Nomfundo to the Equal programme. Our commitment to finding and amplifying the voices of female African creators on the African continent has led us to find exceptional voices like Nomfundo, and the amazing talents before her, such as Ayra Starr, Amaarae and DBN Gogo. It is our hope that other young women creators see this as proof that their talents can and will be recognised and supported.”
