Call him a clown or funny man if you like but King Nuba regards himself as a true artist and entertainer.
Born Ndabezinhle Yamkela Nuba in Mzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal, he is one of the popular characters on social media. Nuba, 23, is also a music composer and artist who is able to sing all types of music styles such as maskandi, Afro-pop and gospel.
He usually acts, sings and dances in the videos he posts, which make people laugh.
To complete his funny look, he dresses in oversized shirts and pants, which makes him look older. Nuba defines his funny dress style as umswenko wasezweni.
In explaining his talent, he says: “I don't regard myself as a comedian. I am just an entertainer who entertains people. When it comes to music, I really don’t want to be boxed [in], I sing whatever I like. What is important is that I am doing what I like and enjoy. I am actually happy that what I do has made me popular and grew my following on all my social media platforms.”
The funny man rose to prominence three years ago, at the height of the lockdown.
He has even featured on TV shows like Imbewu. That is not all. He gets invited to schools around Mzimkhulu and Durban, where he is based, to motivate pupils.
“It has been my childhood dream to be famous. But it happened fast and I thank God for that. I have always wanted to act on TV, and seeing myself on Imbewu made me proud. I’m glad that I don’t have to chase some of these things. I get approached, which shows that I am a king by nature. Now that I am famous, I just want to continue entertaining people and making them laugh.”
As an artist and composer, he has released five singles so far. One of the popular tracks that have been trending is called Wathi Ummm, featuring school children. Though the song is sung in a funny way, there is a strong message attached to it. He encourages people not to give up in life.
Nuba explains that having 400,000 followers on Facebook, 69,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel and 100,000 followers on Instagram has made his brand grow fast. Now he gets booked to MC at different events in Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal, which is something that he never dreamt of.
He plans to drop an album next year but first plans to win Ukhozi FM’s Ingoma Ehlukanisa Unyaka competition in December.
