The Broadcasting Complaints Commission (BCCSA) will not be entertaining any third party complaints regarding reality TV show Uyajola 9/9.
The organisation has made it clear that complaints of parties not involved in the episodes featured in Uyajola 9/9 will not be entertained. Calls for the show presented by Jub Jub Maarohanye to be taken off air have mounted after recent episodes.
On Sunday, the episode featured Dominique, who wanted Jub-Jub to assist her in exposing her husband Brandon's philandering.
As per the show's modus operandi, the husband was caught red-handed, in bed with his mistress. However, events that followed have angered many viewers.
The wife removed a duvet cover the couple were sleeping under, leaving them exposed to cameras and crew members who were present.
The treatment of the naked pair led to public anger over the violation of their rights with many questioning whether the couple had consented to being filmed.
Moja Love, the channel that broadcasts Uyajola 9/9, told Sowetan that it has never received any complaints about the controversial show. The channel said its audience understood the premise of the show.
A series of questions were sent to BCCSA regarding complaints about Uyajola 9/9 but the organisation responded in a blanket statement.
Registrar at BCCSA Shouneez Martin said in her response: “In terms of clause 28.4 (dignity & privacy), of the Subscription Code of Conduct, only individuals who have been on the receiving end of such broadcasts have locus standi to complain. Accordingly, we cannot entertain complaints from 3rd parties.”
When asked if people featured in Uyajola 9/9 normally sign a consent form, head of Moja TV Channels Bokani Moyo said: “We follow standard industry procedures and processes on all our shows and Ujayola is no exception. We are a channel that prides itself in reflecting what is happening in our communities without fear or favour. Many people are aware that these are the things that are happening in the dark and as a channel we expose and bring them to light.”
About last week’s episode, Moyo said: “We always take into consideration the feedback our viewers give us and see the feedback as constructive criticism. This gives us an opportunity to evaluate where we can continuously improve. We create the content for the viewers so it’s important to allow them a platform to express their feelings."
