Crimpeline, polyester georgette, berets and Scottish shirts were the order of the day on Sunday when August Wilson’s theatre show Fences opened at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

With the theme being 50s vintage, both young and old did their best to look the part.

Women wore crimplene outfits and completed the look with stylish hats. Men wore tight double breasted suits with straw hats or flat wool or cotton caps.

Some attendees modernised the vintage fashion while others completed the look with berets.

Some of the people who stood out included Shoki Mmola, Nthati Moshesh, Gregory Maqoma, Sibusisiwe Manqele, Khanyi Magubane and Refilwe Modiselle.

The TV and theatre industry came together to enjoy the well-written piece of theatre.

With John Kani pulling out as a lead actor just days before the opening night due to ill-health, the crop of talented actors featured pulled off a great performance.

Fences is a 1985 play which tells the story of a family, headed by Troy (Tumisho Masha) and his wife Rose ( Khutjo Green) navigating various hurdles with their son Cory (Atandwa Kani), Troy’s brother Gabriel (Sibusiso Mamba), his best friend Jim Bono (Lunga Radebe) and Lyons (Hlomla Dandala), Troy’s son from a previous relationship.

Masha who took on the lead role of Troy, which was originally played John Kani, killed the role.

Radebe, who took over the role of Bono was amazing in his new character.

Green, the only woman in the show, Atandwa, Dandala and Mamba delivered a spectacular performance.

The entire cast got a standing ovation at the end of the show.
