Wellness plays a crucial part in helping us achieve a higher quality of life. While eating well and going consistently to the gym may bring a remarkable difference to our lives, nurturing the mind and soul is equally important. After all, the various aspects of wellness are interconnected and wellness is more than just physical health. It is multidimensional and holistic.

For businesswoman, mother of three and former reality TV star Mome Mahlangu, wellness is tantamount to healing and serves as the key to being at peace with oneself.

“It means being okay inside and out. It refers to having gone through healing for you to be well. It’s about what you feed your mind, body and spirit through your daily lifestyle. We cannot be fully well until we heal ourselves from the inside,” she says.

With a weight-loss journey that occurred in the public eye and left many of her fans inspired and in awe, Mahlangu does more than simply maintain her physical well-being.

“In my journey in the industry, I went through my own personal struggles in terms of my health and finding emotional balance. Those periods in my life were creating a chronic illness.

“I was falling into depression, I gained so much weight. I went through a number of miscarriages and it was actually upsetting me. I was literally deteriorating. I basically survived everything through the support of my husband and my family.”

As part of her healing journey, Mahlangu made it a point to prioritise her wellness. In making wellness a lifestyle, she continues to change the lives of many through her MomeWellness Livin products. These include a plant-based tonic, nutritional shakes and Moringa products, all of which bring multiple benefits including boosting immunity, providing clarity of mind and improving water intake.

Over and above, using these products and taking care of oneself physically, Mahlangu also encourages the nurturing of mental health and protecting one’s peace of mind.

“I wish I had learnt this when I was younger. The less nonsense you have to deal with, the more mentally balanced you will be. Being healthy and well is about understanding that you become what you eat, read and hear every single day.

“Do not live in circumstances that feed you negativity on a daily basis. We become better when we cut out things that don’t feed us in any positive way. There are certain things that will block your mental state because of what you are feeding yourself. Your body cannot just run if your mind is not in the right place,” she says.

As a form of self-love, she encourages taking active steps to ensure holistic health and happiness. In the end, the journey of wellness includes choosing what is good for oneself and eliminating what is not.

“Do not be unfair to yourself. Don’t deny yourself mental wellness. It is possible to be well, very much so. You just need to cut out those things that do not make you well. You owe yourself one thing: to live in a healthy mind and body. That is your birth right.”
