Flow – The Book About Menstruation

Author: Candice Chirwa

This book was written by menstrual activist Candice Chirwa alongside Karen Jeynes, Pontsho Pilane, Ilana Johnson, Tariq Hoosen and Claire Fourie. The book is a good source of information on how the menstrual cycle works, what can go wrong, concerns for those who have just started menstruating, how different cultures view menstruation and how to take care of yourself.  You can find the book at various bookstores but it's currently on sale at loot.co.za for R199.

My Sister, the Serial Killer

Author: Oyinkan Braithwaite

This book is as crazy as the title. The debut novel by Oyinkan Braithwaite is a sharp-paced contemporary African book. It follows the lives of two Nigerian sisters who find different ways to cope in a patriarchal world.

One is a beautiful serial killer who kills her pesty boyfriends and gets her sister to clean up afterwards, the other is the less beautiful sister who tries by all means to be a good Nigerian daughter but is haunted by her sister's secret. It's darkly funny, you should give it a try.  The book can be found at Exclusive Books for about R300.

Married but Intimately Divorced

Author: Dr Mashudu David Mbedzi

I'd recommend that married couples and those in romantic relationships read this book as it gives tips that spouses and partners can practically implement to strengthen their physical and emotional bond with one another during this festive period.

In his book, Mbedzi provides solutions on how married couples can avoid and/or deal with being emotionally disconnected from each other. He concedes that problems will always be there in a marriage but all it takes is for both spouses to be committed, purposeful and deliberate in addressing their marital problems and making their union work.

Mbedzi goes into detail and mainly explores the theme of how in society today there are married couples who are living together physically but are divorced because of lack of intimacy, emotional connection and constant, mutual communication.

You can order the book through Mashududavid.mbedzi929@gmail.com and 072-793-3531
