BAPTISTA da Costa e Silva knows he looks good in uniform and patients at Natalspruit Hospital agree with him.

At 10 years old, Baptista is the youngest volunteer at the beleaguered hospital.

"I go to the wards to say hi to patients. They smile and say I look good in my uniform," Baptista said.

Kitted in camouflage military fatigues, little Baptista stands out among the older volunteers.

"I work with my dad. If he has a lot of papers to work with I help him carry them. I also help deliver linen to the wards," he said.

Baptista has been coming to the hospital with his father Walter since Thursday.

A former soldier, Walter da Costa e Silva runs the Militia Trust and the Displaced and Migrants Persons Support Programme, two NGOs that have provided volunteer services at the hospital since the strike started.
