GOVERNMENT officials were using the clear weather yesterday to fly over Pretoria in a helicopter to assess flood damage and provide some relief to affected residents.
Local government and housing MEC Humphrey Memezi and other officials were inspecting damage in Mamelodi and Centurion, including the Centurion Lake Hotel which had to be closed due to flooding on Monday, said local government chief of staff Mandla George.
Their next destination would be the Vaal, Soweto, Ivory Park, followed by the Klipspruit River.
Forty-three families returned to their homes in Ivory Park after flooding forced them to evacuate.
George said during the flyover the MEC would land, talk to residents and hand out "some relief items".
The City of Tshwane remained on high alert yesterday due to fears of rising water levels in Mamelodi's Lusaka informal settlement.
Spokesperson William Baloyi said shack dwellers should stack sand bags to hold back the water.
"Although there was water on the streets, the situation has not warranted an evacuation."
People concerned about rising waters where they live should contact 10177 for assistance.
Meanwhile, the Tshwane city council confirmed it would give fireman Henry Knox, who drowned while on duty, an official funeral tomorrow at the Charis Christian Church in Wonderboom.
The father of four's canoe capsized while searching for people swept away by rivers in Centurion.
Senior management at the Tshwane community safety department, led by MEC for public safety Dikeledi Lehobye, visited his family on Tuesday, saying they would continue embracing Knox's bravery.
Knox served the fire brigade for 24 years.
