“There were four candidates. They were put through a gruelling process. Only one person could emerge from it. And that is Patricia  de Lille,” Zille told reporters in Cape Town.

She said she was confident De Lille would “with her inner strength and determination, give it her all”.

De Lille said she was “honoured” by the nomination before listing “achievements” by the Democratic Alliance in Cape Town.

“Under the leadership of the Democratic Alliance, things are getting better in Cape Town step by step, and with Cape Town’s support, we can continue to deliver a better life for all, step by step,” said De Lille.

“I am also very aware that there are many challenges that we need to work harder than ever on — we must create jobs and unlock opportunities for more people.

"We must make our neighbourhoods safer, and fight to rid our communities of drugs and substance abuse.”

She said she would over the next few weeks present her “vision for how we can take Cape Town forward”.
