More than 550 Putco buses have been deployed to transport thousands of Zion Christian Church (ZCC) members travelling to Moria in Limpopo for the Easter pilgrimage.

During a briefing by Limpopo transport and community safety officials, Putco spokesperson Lindokuhle Xulu said the company had rolled out 550 buses, and most had already arrived in Limpopo.

“We have deployed 550 buses to support the pilgrims travelling to Moria,” he said.

Xulu said 95% of the buses had entered the province, and about 60% had arrived at Moria.

He said the buses used were part of Putco’s newer fleet and were under the original manufacturer’s maintenance plan.

“The deployment is of our new generation buses. These are buses seven years old or less,” he said.

To avoid delays and possible disruptions, Xulu said spare buses had been positioned along the route to respond quickly to breakdowns.

Mechanical teams were stationed at different points to attend to problems on the road.

Xulu said Putco had arranged plans to help drivers manage fatigue with compulsory stops at petrol stations to avoid road accidents.

Limpopo transport and community safety MEC Susani Violet Mathye said extra traffic officers and vehicles had been deployed across the province to monitor traffic flow and improve visibility on the roads.

“Our main focus during the Easter weekend is road safety and ensuring all pilgrims arrived safely,” Mathye said.

Motorists are urged to drive responsibly and be patient as traffic volumes increase during the holiday weekend.
