Five arrested during Kimberley protest over high electricity tariffs

Five people were arrested for public violence following a violent service delivery protest in Kimberley, Northern Cape.

On Thursday protestors in the Northern Cape city damaged buildings and street signs as they picketed against high electricity tariffs and demanded the removal of certain municipal officials according to reports.

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Dimakatso Mooi said the arrested would be charged with public violence.

“There was damage to a few buildings,” she said.

It has also been reported that three people were hospitalised after being injured during the protest. ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring told a News24 that "ER24 paramedics were alerted to the scene after receiving reports that three people had been injured by rocks during the protest action.”
