About 5,000 students have been deregistered by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for the 2020 academic year.

The scheme said it decided to defund the 5,000 as it was discovered that their total household family income was above the R350,000 threshold.

NSFAS administrator Dr Randall Carolissen said: “A recent financial information obtained from South African Revenue Services (SARS) has revealed that these students' declared total household family income was above the R350,000 threshold”.

In order to qualify for NSFAS, students should come from a family with a combined annual household income of not more than R350,000.

Carollisen said the scheme had issued communique to all affected students to notify them of their funding status, and the process that they should follow.

“The affected students will have 14 days from the date of issue to petition this decision by submitting proof of family  income or change of income to NSFAS for review.

NSFAS reserves the right to make the correct funding decisions based on its financial eligibility verification processes,” Carollisen said.

This comes as the scheme opened the 2021 application cycle which started from August 3 and will run till November 30.
