Award winning musician and actor Sjava, who had been accused of raping his ex-girlfriend, Lady Zamar three years ago, is off the hook.
Sjava, was facing a rape charge after Lady Zamar opened a case of rape that allegedly happened at a hotel in Thohoyondou, Limpopo, in 2017 after a concert.
Lady Zamar opened the case of rape at the local police station last year and it was passed on to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for a decision on whether to prosecute.
Limpopo police spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed that the case against Sjava was declined for prosecution two weeks ago.
“ Last year the case docket was handed over to the senior public prosecutor for a decision. On November 5, the case docket was withdrawn by the director of public prosecutions at court,” he said.
Lady Zamar went on her Instagram account to speak about her alleged rape ordeal.
She said before the alleged rape there had been no romantic relationship between her and Sjava. She claimed they were simply getting to know each other.
When Sowetan contacted Sjava for comment on the withdrawal of the case he said he was busy with a video shoot and would revert but he had not done so at the time of publication.
Sjava has refuted the rape allegations since they were first made.
NPA spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said: “The state declined to prosecute the case because it believed the facts or evidence do not support a successful prosecution.”
Shouneez Adams, head of label at Universal Music SA, which Lady Zamar is contracted to, said she was not aware that charges had been withdrawn against Sjava. When addressing her followers on social media in August, Lady Zamar said she was raped by Sjava in September after she had met him a mere five months earlier in 2017.
Lady Zamar could not be contacted directly. Adams gave Sowetan an email address of the managing director at Universal Music SA where questions can be sent to Lady Zamar, but she did not respond questions sent to her at the time of publishing.
At the time she said she had had a breast reduction done in July 2017 and had been told by her doctor that she wasn’t allowed to have intimate relations for at least six weeks.
