The Mpumalanga department of education has expressed shock at the death of a pupil who was crushed when a Jojo water tank fell on her at a school in Middelburg on Wednesday morning.
The 12-year-old girl was in grade 6.
“It is with deep sorrow and sadness that the Mpumalanga department of education learnt of the passing away of a grade 6 learner in Bankfontein Combined School in the Steve Tshwete local municipality, Nkangala district, on Wednesday morning. The grade 6 learner passed away as a result of a Jojo tank that fell on her in the school premises,” said a statement from the department.
Mpumalanga education MEC Bonakele Majuba said she was saddened by the incident.
“I wish to express our deepest condolences to the bereaved parents and the family, as well as the Bankfontein school community for this loss of a young life. May her soul rest in peace,” said Majuba.
Department spokesperson Jasper Zwane said the department has already visited the child's family.
“The department has since visited the school and offered counselling for the learners. We also went to visit the family. Painful as it is, we are talking with the family on how the department can help,” said Zwane.
