The mother of a 17-year-old girl who was allegedly raped when a game of truth or dare spiralled out of control has recalled how her daughter broke down as she told her how she had been abused by one of her friends.

The teenager was allegedly raped when she was dared to strip naked while playing the game at her friend's house in Boksburg, on the East Rand, in February.

Constable Justice Ramaube confirmed that a case of rape was opened and that investigations were ongoing.

“I can confirm that the case took place on February 27 but the victim opened a case on March 27. The perpetrator has not been arrested as investigations are still under way,” Ramaube said.

The mother, who cannot be named to protect her daughter’s identity, told Sowetan yesterday : “She told me that they were at their friend’s house and they were playing a game of truth and dare. She explained that she was among a group of about 10 ... and that they spun a bottle to choose a person who would either pick whether they would answer a question with the truth or choose the option of a dare,” the mother said.

She said when it was her daughter’s turn, she opted for the dare.

“My daughter said she went into her friend’s room after she was dared to take off her clothes. A male friend followed her into the room and when she was naked he started kissing her. He then raped her,” she said.

The mother said her daughter told the male friend to stop but he refused.

“She said he only stopped when another male friend went into the room to inquire about what was happening,” she said.

She said she later noticed a change in her daughter’s behaviour.

“She used to be more conversational and was happy but she started locking herself in her room and wouldn't talk to us anymore. She looked sad and alienated and I didn't know what the problem was until I sat her down and asked her what the problem was.”

The mother said her daughter broke down and told her what happened, and she took her to the police station where they opened a case.

“I also took her for counselling and she is slowly becoming normal. I don't think she will ever be OK with what happened to her. I just want the police to arrest that boy so that we can get justice.”
