The Gauteng department of education has expressed concern about the increasing numbers of Covid-19 cases at schools.

During the province’s weekly update on Covid-19, the department said there were 3,314 positive cases reported at schools.

The report also showed that more pupils were testing positive for the virus. According to the report there are 2,226 schools affected, 1,977 pupils who tested positive as well as 1,077 teachers. A total of 138 administration staff, 75 general assistants and 42 youth brigades were also reported to have tested positive.

The highest number of 614 cases are from Tshwane South, followed by the West Rand with 342 positive cases.

Provincial spokesperson Steve Mabona said the increasing numbers were concerning.

“As the department we can confirm that a growing number of children at our schools are testing positive for Covid-19. We are monitoring the situation very closely and where it is recommended by the department of health for us to close schools, we are doing so, which takes about three days. We are concerned about the numbers and saying everyone has a role to play to stop the spread of the virus,” he said.
