As sporadic looting sprees ensue in parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, Jabulani Mall in Soweto was the latest target on Monday afternoon when scores of people looted shops while police looked on.

Countless young men, women and children were seen running towards the direction of the mall to go and help themselves to goods. They stole clothes, boxes of shoes, pillows, mattresses, flat screen TV sets, large fridges, irons, blankets, meat and other grocery items. The residents living nearby used green trolleys to take the goods out of the mall.

Perhaps the most difficult task for the looters was trying to open a liquor shop with a hammer so that they could help themselves to the alcohol inside.

A couple of police officers and Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officials tried to disperse the crowds by running towards them and apprehending them.

Most of the looters escaped by jumping over fences. When outside, some started throwing stones and rocks towards the direction of the police. As soon as the police ran away for cover, the looters returned to loot even more.

Some people stood outside and watched in disbelief at the people who were looting.

Police managed to arrest three people.

The situation has since remained calm with police and JMPD officials patrolling the area.
