Police minister Bheki Cele has told the family of the slain Tshwane councillor that investigators already know who they are looking for in connection with his murder.
Cele visited the family of Tshepo Motaung in Mabopane, Pretoria, alongside Gauteng premier David Makhura, community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko and police provincial commissioner Elias Mawela.
Motaung was gunned down outside his uncle’s home on Friday in the residential suburb.
Cele said police already had pictures of the people they were looking for in connection with Motaung’s murder.
“We have a glimpse of the trigger pullers but they are not the people we are looking for. The people that we want are the plotters and planners,” Cele said.
“That’s brutality at another level. We will make sure that the perpetrators are brought forth to answer for their doings.”
Cele said that they were not looking for members of factions or political faces but they were dealing with criminals
“It doesn’t matter who you are, it does not matter what position you have, with regards to dealing with criminality we take you as you are and arrest you,” said Cele.
Hundreds of locals also came in large numbers to show the family support and convey their condolences.
Makhura said: “We are very disturbed with the number of violent incidents and killings that are taking place in this area of our province in Tshwane.”
Makhura said a provincial team headed by Mawela was investigating the matter.
“A lot of our councillors feel unsafe in our communities,” Makhura said.
He said that he did not know how a human could kill another with such brutality, using a R5 rifle that could kill an elephant, shooting a man 20 times at close range.
Family spokesperson Tebogo Motaung said the family was humbled by the manner in which people came in numbers to honour and pay tribute to his brother.
“We really appreciate the support and love from the community,” he said.
Motaung’s brutal murder sparked a community protest on Monday, with locals taking to the streets demanding justice.
