At least 41,000 tons of sugar have been destroyed after RCL Foods's Komati mill near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga caught fire.
The company said a full investigation was under way after fire ravaged part of the mill on Tuesday morning. Employees were advised to stay home while management dealt with the cause of the fire and quantified the damage caused.
“Yes, we have asked some employees to stay at home during the time of investigation for the cause of the fire. What we can say is that 41,000 tons of sugar have been destroyed and as a company we are quantifying the damage caused while an independent investigation is taking place to find the cause of the fire,” said RCL Foods spokesperson Steven Heat.
“We had an unfortunate incident at Komati mill, where a devastating fire spread through a raw sugar warehouse in the early hours of October 5. Fortunately, no injuries were sustained. In light of the above, Komati mill operations have been suspended until further notice,” said the company in a statement .
RCL Foods, formerly TSB Sugar, is co- owned by billionaire Johan Rupert.
