A three-year-old toddler is among five people who died instantly following a head-on collision on the R555 between Middleburg and Stoffberg in Mpumalanga.
According to the department of the community safety, security and liaison, the driver of the sedan and two passengers, including the child, and the driver of the light delivery van and a passenger died.
Spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said two other people sustained serious injuries and were taken to Middleburg Hospital.
“It is alleged that the crash occurred as a result of dangerous overtaking. Investigation into the crash is underway,“ he said.
MEC for community safety, security and liaison Vusi Shongwe said: “It’s sad that we continue to lose lives on our roads, especially on avoidable instances. We are calling for drivers to be patient and respect the lives of other drivers on the road.
"What’s more sad is that an innocent child had to lose a life on mistakes or carelessness of elders,” said Shongwe.
