
Despite the Electoral Commission’s stated ambition to finalise 90% of the results before Tuesday midnight, only 66 % of counting had been captured from voting districts across the country by 10am on Wednesday.
Of the country’s eight metro’s only two had clear majority control by one party in the morning, with the DA at just over 62% in Cape Town while the ANC held a lead in Buffalo City with just over 60%.
All other metro’s including Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, eThekwini, Mangaung and the Nelson Mandela Bay looked set to be hung and eventually lead through coalitions.
The ANC had previously maintained control of eThekwini and Mangaung while the other metros had been led through coalitions .
A number of political parties had already indicated that they were ready to enter coalition talks on the running of the hung councils, with such talks expected to ensue when results are finalised by the commission.
In Johannesburg, the ANC had maintained a lead at 34.68%, DA 25.5%, ActionSA 16.61% while the EFF was at 11.77%.
In Ekurhuleni, the governing party’s lead remained at just over 38%, followed by the DA at 28.74%, while the EFF and ActionSA remained at 13.8% and 6.3%.
The DA was leading with just over 35% of votes in Tshwane, followed by the ANC at 32.44% while the EFF, FF Plus and ActionSA followed respectively at 10.24%, 8.18% and 7.65%.
