ACDP leader Rev Kenneth Meshoe wants the looming coalition governments in hung councils to be vehicles to help ensure clean governance and stability.
Meshoe's party holds valuable seats in several hung municipalities, including Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Nelson Mandela Bay and eThekwini.
Meshoe said the ACDP's main precondition was a bold plan aimed at ensuring that governance was restored in municipalities it would form coalitions in.
“What we want to ensure with these coalitions is to ensure clean governance and stability. There are two parties that lead these coalitions. It cannot be the one that is associated with corruption. So, we are demanding a plan and focus on clean governance in the government we will be part of,” Meshoe.
Meshoe has already expressed his willingness to work with the DA to form government in Tshwane.
The EFF has, however, put land reform as one of its key priorities as it prepares to enter into coalition talks about hung municipalities.
Addressing a press briefing at the national results operations centre in Pretoria on Thursday, party leader Julius Malema said the EFF is willing to work with anybody who was willing to prioritise basic service delivery such as water within an agreed period such as resolving the Hammanskraal water problem in six months.
Malema said his party was “hated” by the DA and the FF Plus who have both indicated that they wouldn’t enter into coalition negotiations with the EFF due to their stance on land expropriation without compensation which will be central to coalition negotiations they will be part of.
“We are not going to do a coalition of positions,” said Malema adding that they were using whatever mechanism at their disposal to push for their policy on land expropriation without compensation,” Malema said.
