The Plettenberg Bay Rage festival has been cancelled a day before it was set to start.

The organisers announced the decision on Facebook.. They said there was an "alarming number of positive cases" recorded by those who were meant to be making their way to the festival. This had "shaken us to our core", the organisers said in their post.

“Almost all schools set to attend the Plett Rage have positive cases. Based on the trajectory of this virus, this is only a tiny percentage of what we are now certain will show up. The numbers are only going to increase rapidly.

“Though we, as organisers, have implemented the most stringent Covid-19 preventive measures, there was no way to pre-empt the devastation that the current surge of Covid-19 cases nationally would cause.

“We are shattered,” the post read.

Earlier on Thursday, the Western Cape health department said it had recorded a 115% increase in Covid-19 cases in the Garden Route.

The department said the spike had come during the last week of November, with 16 cases of the new Omicron variant being detected.

This is the second Rage event to be canned this week.  Ballito Rage was cancelled by organisers on Wednesday after 32 guests and four staff members tested positive for Covid-19.

Ballito Rage organisers said they were processing refunds for revellers who had tested positive for Covid-19 before attending the event.
