Best friends Lisebo Malise and Alex Moyo credited the combined three distinctions they bagged to the late evening study sessions they had together at school.
The pupils from Naledi high in Soweto, were among dozens of matric pupils at the school who could not contain their happiness as they were hugging their teachers after getting their results.
The school obtained a 76,7% pass rate in their 2021 matric exams, a drop from the 88,3% the school got in 2020.
Malise, 20, and Alex, 16, obtained two and one distinction, respectively.
“I am excited. It was a rough ride. We had two bad years of experiencing Covid-19. I am happy I made it,” said Alex who
obtained a distinction in tourism (84.
“Lisebo and I would study late into the night together. We would share notes and help each other with questions the other would not understand,” said Alex.
Lisebo, who plans to study law in Lesotho, said: “I really deserve this. I worked hard. I was cross-nighting here at school. I would come at 7pm and leave at 6am in the morning.”

His highest mark is 86% in history.
“I remember the night before our business studies exam we (he and Alex) were the only ones studying at school for the paper. We worked on previous question papers together,” said Malise.
One of the top performers at Naledi, Bonolo Morajane, 19, with three distinctions, said the sleepless nights she had contributed to her outstanding performance.
Bonolo's highest mark is 83% in life orientation.
“I feel amazing. I studied, disciplined myself and managed my time well,” she said.
Bonolo said she plans to study occupational therapy at the University of the Western Cape.
