The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is confident that the police officer who allegedly gunned down his ex-girlfriend at Tembisa Hospital last week will get his day in court as his condition improves.
Ipid spokesperson Grace Langa told Sowetan that the police officer was recovering and getting stronger to face the music for the murder of nurse Lebogang Monene, 30, who he allegedly shot about six times in the hospital's emergency parking lot.
“He is definitely not dying,” Langa said. “He will be able to stand trial and stand for interrogation and our investigation has revealed that he missed [vital parts] of his head when he turned the gun on himself. He shot the side of the head and the bullet exited through the mouth and not the neck.”
Monene and her alleged killer had been dating for some time and have a child together. Her family said they broke up a few months ago and were not living together anymore.
Monene’s father Nicholas said the family wanted justice for their daughter and even demanded a state funeral for her.
“She was killed by a policeman at her place of work — a policeman who was on duty and in full uniform armed with a state gun,” he said.
Monene's memorial service was held on Tuesday at Tembisa Christian Family and she will be buried in Marulaneng Village in Mokopane, Limpopo, on Saturday February 19.
“Seeing her at the morgue tore my heart into little pieces. I’m glad my wife did not see her daughter in that state,” her father said.
“She was covered in blood everywhere like a sacrificed animal. Her body was swollen and full of bullet wounds. My question is what crime did she commit to deserve such death? If you don’t want someone anymore you move on, you don't kill them.”
Nicholas said the family did not know much about the police officer as they lived in Limpopo with Monene's two children.
