The Vhavenda royal family is yet to elect a regent after a planned meeting failed to quorate last week.
Sowetan understands that the meeting set for Thursday last week didn't take place after some core senior royal family members didn't make it to the crucial meeting, which was to nominate a regent to replace the former King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana.
Ramabulana has been stripped of his R1.2m salary and private security by the Limpopo government after the Constitutional Court declared his appointment invalid and unlawful.
The royal family spokesperson Charles Ramabulana confirmed that a meeting didn't take place after senior members tendered apologies due to various reasons.
“Indeed the meeting didn't quorate because some seniors reported sick and others were not available for personal reasons. We have since postponed the meeting and will take place [later] this week,” he said.
According to an insider, Ramabulana and his niece Princess Masindi Mphephu, who took him to court over the throne, will both not be eligible for regency due to the ongoing legal battle between them.
“The two will not be eligible because we fear the legal implications. Remember the ConCourt judgment ordered us to make sure that we follow legal procedures and we thought is best that we don't include the pair until their matter is concluded in court,” said the insider.
