She said, however, she wasn't sure if affected families and individuals will benefit from the funding to repair their homes and other property that could have been damaged or lost during the floods

State funding is expected to be fast-tracked as soon as President Cyril Ramaphosa declares KwaZulu-Natal a disaster area.

KZN cooperative governance and traditional affairs spokesperson Nonala Ndlovu explained: “Emergency funding can be identified to assist the areas that have been affected. That is the main thing about it being declared a state of disaster. Therefore, from the emergency funding there will be interventions to restore the situation. The emergency fund will assist in repairing the infrastructure.”

She said, however, she wasn't sure if affected families and individuals will benefit from the funding to repair their homes and other property that could have been damaged or lost during the floods.

OUTsurance spokesperson Natasha Kawulesar said the company has received a large number of claims over the last few days arising from the floods in KZN relating to damaged property.

She said it was too early to quantify the claims.

“We are engaging with our clients where emergency repairs may be needed, conducting physical and digital assessments and primed for the repair process. Damage resulting from events such as these storms and flooding is fully covered.  Clients who have not contacted us yet may do so via our App, portal or by calling us and we are ready to assist,” said Kawulesar.

Meanwhile, FlySAfair has offered customers travelling to or from Durban’s King Shaka International Airport between April 13 and 22 free changes to their bookings or a full refund.

ComAir said they had not received any cancellations thus far but added Kulula had updated its booking policy.

The SA Weather Service said more rainfall was anticipated in the province from Friday until Saturday.

“North West, Free State, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal are likely to experience the return of thunderstorms, along with the risk of localised flooding and/or occurrences of hail and strong, damaging winds.

“Saturday sees scattered-to-widespread showers and thundershowers persisting over the central provinces, spreading to include the eastern and north-eastern provinces, where further significant to heavy falls may occur at places, especially over North West, Free State and Gauteng.”
