A clean sweep.

This is how Oscar Mabuyane’s re-election as Eastern Cape ANC provincial chairperson was described by his supporters.

Mabuyane's allies also won to claim other top positions in the party.

Mabuyane beat opponent Babalo Madikizela by 150 votes after clinching 812 votes on Monday.

Elated, Mabuyane’s supporters immediately picked him up from his seat and carried him all the way to the stage.

The provincial conference was characterised by tense discussions, lobbying and tight security pre-empting the violence that broke out during the 2017 conference dubbed the festival of chairs.

But by early Monday morning, predictions were already circulating online with those aligned to Madikizela predicting he would take it.

Zolile Williams, a municipal manager (MM) from Joe Gqabi district municipality, was elected provincial treasurer, beating opponent and former Nelson Mandela Bay councillor Andile Lungisa.

National executive committee member Dr Aaron Motsoaledi said as an MM, Williams would have to resign from Joe Gqabi as he would be in violation of the Municipal Systems Act.

The act states that a municipal manager or manager directly accountable to a municipal manager may not hold political office in a political party.

Party president Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to close conference after 3pm this afternoon.

Ramaphosa enjoys Mabuyane’s support who is also expected to endorse him for a second term.

Others provincial leaders elected include Lulama Ngcukayitobi who is returning as provincial secretary with 807 votes while his opponent Terris Ntuthu got 667.

Coming for a second term as deputy secretary Helen Sauls-August won with 805 votes after beating Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe who received 663.

Mlungisi Mvoko is also coming back as deputy chair after getting 812 votes.

Mvoko got 812 of the votes while counterpart Xolile Nkompela received 657.

Speaker in the legislature Helen Sauls-August secured her spot as deputy secretary for another term, while Zolile Williams given the nod for the position of treasurer.

This is a developing story.
