The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has temporarily suspended applications for the funding of non-profit organisations, saying it needed time to process the ones they received.
“In the current financial year, 5,329 applications have been received between April 1 and June 24 2022,” said the commission's spokesperson, Ndivhuho Mafela.
“The period of suspension is intended to allow the NLC to conduct an in-depth analysis of all applications received thus far and assess the ability to respond to the funding needs of the many non-profit organisations, as well as insights into the provincial, sectoral and sub-sectoral applications v the available budget.
“Adjudication of applications already received will continue during this period,” he said.
Mafela said applications would be closed from August 1-31, with the intention to resume on September 1.
“The issuance of the call gives effect to section 2A (4) of the Lotteries Act 57 of 1997, as amended, which empowers the NLC to, in consultation with the board, invite applications for grants from worthy causes in the prescribed manner.
“In the financial years 2020/21 and 2021/22, the NLC funded 2,799 and 3,295 projects respectively, while applications received exceeded a combined 18,000.
“The NLC wishes to assure all interested parties of its commitment to impactful, fair and equitable distribution of funding.
“Applicants are also reminded that visits to the Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo offices are strictly by appointment only, and may be booked through the call centre on 08600-65383.”
