A suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting at a Katlehong tavern in Ekurhuleni, which left two people dead.
Gauteng police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Sello said the man is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge magistrate’s court today. He was arrested on Friday. “Police investigation will still continue regarding this matter,” said Sello yesterday.
The arrest follows the shooting at Mputlane’s Inn on July 8 where two men were murdered and four other people sustained injuries.
It was reported that four men, one of them armed with a 9mm pistol, went into the pub and started firing shots randomly at patrons. Six were shot while others ran out.
Meanwhile, two people were shot and killed at a tavern in Ga-Rankuwa, northwest of Pretoria, on Friday.
“Unknown suspects driving a silver Volkswagen Polo reportedly fired shots randomly at patrons who were sitting outside at a tavern in Ga-Rankuwa. The motive of the shooting is unknown and police will be investigating two cases of murder and seven of attempted murder,” said Sello.
The incident brings the number of people who have died from tavern shootings to 24 in less than a month after other deaths in Soweto and Pietermaritzburg.
Sello urged anyone with information about the incident or the suspects to report it at the nearest police station or call the Crime Stop Hotline at 08600-10111.
