ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe has taken a dig at former leader Thabo Mbeki, who previously said the party had been attracting the wrong members in its ranks whose only preoccupation was positions.

“Those that raise this question, some of them are elders, I’ve heard the whispers. We need to ask them what have they done themselves to assist the ANC in its recruitment drive to make sure the guidelines on recruitment address those things,” Mabe said on the sidelines of a media briefing at Luthuli House yesterday.

While delivering the keynote address at the memorial service of Struggle stalwart Rita Alice Ndzanga in August, Mbeki said every conference since 1994, without exception, had attracted the wrong people.

“Since 1994, if you look at all conferences of the ANC, up to 2017, all of them without exception and since we came into government, we have been attracting into our ranks wrong people,” he said.

Mabe said he wanted to move away from the term “wrong members”. He said they needed to make sure new members were indoctrinated in the party's conventions and given political education.

After its policy conference, the ANC embarked on a membership renewal process across all nine provinces as it heads to its national conference in December.

Mabe said a final audit of the ANC's membership was under way which would be adopted at a special national executive committee meeting on Sunday to pave way for the start of the nomination processes for the conference.
