Some of the hawkers trading at the Pienaarspoort station say they are relieved that the trains are back, which means more customers to boost their profits.

However, they want the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) to allow them to return to selling on the platforms.

Transport minister Fikile Mbalula officially opened the Pienaarspoort to Pretoria Central line on Monday which was good news for businesses who rely on rail commuters to thrive.

Given Mathedza, 28, who has been selling fruits at the station for over a decade said since the return of commuters he has been able to take home about R1,000 daily.

He takes care of his two younger siblings aged 21 and 24.

“We want the minister to allow us to go back to selling in the trains and on the platforms. Our stock flies when we are on the platform at the station. People come out and they see us and buy. On the trains and platforms I used to make R2,000 a day. Out here, my stock is in the sun and deteriorating quickly,” said Mathedza.

Informal traders at Pienaarspoort trade outside the perimetre fence of the station.

Lucas Malatje, 55, who has been selling vegetables at the station for 22 years said he got about R500 a day.

He takes care of his two children, his wife and mother.

“Since the trains were not running business was slow. I got about R300 a day but had no choice as it is the only thing that gives me money. The situation is far much better now.

“I understand that my colleagues here want to trade on the platforms. But what I would wish is for Prasa to give us designated spaces where we can trade. We will pay rent if that is required but it will be better,” Malatje said.

Other informal traders complained that they are unable to access water and the toilets at the station security does not allow them inside.
