Robberies at police stations have been a problem in recent years as criminals target these law enforcement facilities for firearms.

In June, a group of men attacked the Kwaggafontein police station in Mpumalanga at 10pm. The armed men held police officers captive before robbing them of four R5 assault rifles, three pump-action shotguns and three 9mm pistols with 83 rounds of ammunition.

In September, three armed robbers attacked another Mpumalanga police station in Grootvlei, a small mining town near Balfour, and stole three 9mm pistols, one R5 rifle, one shotgun and about 180 live rounds of ammunition.

In the incident, two suspects arrived at the police station on Friday September 2 at about 6pm, claiming to be from Soshanguve, under the pretense of reporting a domestic violence incident.

The suspects found two officers at the community service centre (CSC). They left, only to return later at about 10pm when they complained that their concern was being disregarded by the police.

During this second visit, the group insisted that the safety door of the CSC should be opened and as soon as the people were in, they drew firearms and disarmed two officers.

On November 21 2021, a gang of heavily armed men robbed the Malamulele police station in Limpopo walking away with R5 rifles, 9mm pistols, shotguns and ammunition.

After robbing the police station on Sunday evening, the group also robbed nearby filling stations. A total of 12 people have since been arrested in connection with this incident.
