The deadline for ANC branches to convene branch general meetings to nominate the party's top six at the national conference in December has been extended — again. This time by another week.

This gives provinces, such as the Eastern Cape, that have been trailing behind with convening BGMs a chance to play catch-up.

Last week, ANC Eastern Cape spokesperson Loyiso Magqashela told Sowetan they had convened just over 180 branches out of the province's 641 branches.

In a memo sent to provincial and regional secretaries on Monday, ANC treasurer-general Paul Mashatile told branches  a special national executive committee (NEC) meeting that sat on Friday had received a report from the national conference preparatory committee (NCPC) on progress with BGMs in preparation for the December conference.

“The NEC reflected on some of the challenges faced by branches, including load-shedding, the impact of industrial action and systems issues. Based on an assessment of these reports, it was clear that a number of branches would not be able to hold their BGMs by the extended deadline of Tuesday October 25 2022.

“Accordingly, the NEC decided to further extend the deadline to Monday November 7 subject to consultation with the ANC electoral committee. The extension has been communicated to the ANC electoral committee. The committee has provided a revised timetable,” Mashatile wrote.

Some ANC branches have blamed rolling blackouts for being unable to meet and nominate candidates for the December conference.
