Some of the ANC councillors and activists murdered in the past year:
- eThekwini ANC councillor Sunil Brijmohan was fatally shot in an apparent hit last Friday in Amanzimtoti.
Police said the 46-year-old man was walking in Cato Crescent when he was shot in the head by two suspects. “The suspects fled the scene on foot, and the motive for the killing is unknown,” said police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala.
- Norman Ngwenya was stabbed to death and another comrade was injured during an ANC branch general meeting in Kanyamazane last Sunday.
- ANC councillor in eThekwini Mnqobi Victor Molife was gunned down in September.
- Deputy branch chairperson of an ANC Durban ward, Cassim Phiri, was killed in September after leaving a party caucus meeting. The ANC in eThekwini thereafter called on police minister Bheki Cele and chair of the inter-ministerial committee into political killings in KwaZulu-Natal to sanction an urgent probe into Phiri’s murder.
- ANC Nelson Mandela Bay councillor Andile Andries and the party's regional executive committee member and branch secretary, Lubabalo Keso, were shot dead outside Andries's home in KwaNobuhle, Kariega, in May. Police did not rule out the possibility of the attack being linked to taxi violence.
- ANC eThekwini councillor Siyabonga Mkhize and fellow ANC member Mzukisi Nyanga were murdered in October last year during door-to-door campaigning for the ANC ahead of the November 2021 elections. Mkhize had emerged as the ANC’s preferred candidate in the ward for the 2021 local government elections. Mkhize’s successor as councillor Mzimuni Ngiba, Mlomo Ngcobo and two other co-accused, Sandile Mzizi and Sifiso Vincent Mlondo, have been charged with the murder.
