ABC Motsepe League side Amavarara are faced with a predicament as their players were involved in an altercation in a tavern that allegedly led to a person being killed.

The incident occurred on Sunday at a hangout spot called Magolide in Lady Grey, Eastern Cape, where Amavarara are based.

According to a source, three Amavara players are alleged to have been involved in the scuffle that led to a man losing his life in a stabbing incident. This apparently brought unrest in the small town in the Joe Gqabi District Municipality, with one witness saying residents staged a protest at the Amavarara clubhouse in anger.

Amavarara team manager Ayaduma Penxa confirmed that their players were at the pub when the incident happened and were taken in for questioning by the police.

"The club was made aware of an incident that occurred in the early hours on Sunday after our last league game vs Amampondo. We were also made aware that our players were involved in an altercation that unfortunately led to a loss of life," Penxa told Sowetan.

"We would wait for the processes to unfold before we make any definite statement about the unfortunate incident as the police are still busy with the investigations.

"All players that were at the tavern were taken for police enquiries and have been released."

Eastern Cape SAPS spokesperson warrant officer Majola Nkohli said they were made aware of the death of the man and the Lady Grey detectives are investigating.

"Lady Grey detectives are investigating a murder case after a 28-year-old male passed on at the Lady Grey hospital," Nkohli said.

"It is alleged that the incident was reported to the SAPS on Monday, March 13 2023 at 9am by the hospital staff after the man passed away the previous evening.

"On further investigation, it is alleged that a group of men visiting from East London and men from Khwezi Naledi township were all enjoying themselves at a local tavern when a quarrel started and a 28-year-old male was stabbed in the neck. The investigation is continuing and no arrest has been made yet."

Amavarara finished on top of the Eastern Cape's ABC Motsepe stream A with 34 points after 16 matches.
