For many students, university is like the beginning of one’s freedom, and a very pleasant experience. Some enjoy those moments while fulfilling their university purpose while others enjoy the fun more, to a point where they forget their "why am I here purpose".
They start bunking classes, miss tests, exams and deadlines on submitting assignments. I know the struggle faced by many students after graduation – don't graduate then start feeling education is useless and a total waste of time.
Almost all of us are on social media, especially Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. But, as a student, you need a LinkedIn profile more than any other platforms. If you don’t have one, create it and start networking with professionals. Sell yourself because this is a tool that can help you develop your career. Connect with hiring managers in your field of study and start learning about the key points they look for when hiring.
Start networking, be interested, ask questions, build a strong network. It's not easy but these days it's more about who you know than what you know.
Refrain from posting offensive content on any social media platforms because your future boss can be in your friend list, or worse, being declined an offer because of past interactions online.
Volunteer or do in-service training during school holidays as that's experience. That will make you stand out from other candidates when applying for jobs, because what you bring is not only knowledge but a skillset too which saves time and money training you.
Companies also love hiring people who have helped others without expecting anything in return. Selfless people tend to make good employees/leaders.
Learn time management skills. Complete assignments on time, prepare for tests and exams, and arrive at lecture halls early. Respect people even if you don't know their titles. Learn from everyone and everything, don't limit yourself.
The beginning of the real struggle is after graduation. A degree is only a piece of paper which says "I am a beginner". You need to work hard to become a master in your field and a study shows anyone can get a degree but not everyone can do the job.
The job market has become very competitive, and it is flooded with qualified and overqualified graduates.
Your loved ones tell you how special you are, but it does not apply here. That network you established during university is going to be useful at this stage, Your degree will tell employers what you know and your character witnesses, "your network connections", will tell employers you are a good fit for the job.
Many of us have a company of your dreams to work for, but didn't wish to own the companies. Ever wondered why? Because our educational system teaches us the importance of becoming reputable employees not business owners.
You can start a business today and many kids in 10 years time will dream of working for it. Start something, don't give the excuse of your background, don't tell me about money etc. You are a graduate now, get a job and use some of the money from your salary to start your business.
Don't expect immediate results, starting your own business requires a lot of discipline, dedication, determination and sacrifices. Stay at home if it will save you money, get an affordable apartment, use public transport if possible.
Don't rush your shine. Things acquired in a rush have tendencies of dying fast. Build a solid foundation, it will last you a lifetime..
