PANKA MODISE | Mine dump rapes show we blacks have self-hate

There is no reason under the sun for any person to rape another, but for a gang of men to rape one woman is pure evil.

A film crew was apparently shooting a music video when a gang of informal miners in Basotho blankets stormed the scene, fired guns and raped the models.

The gang of so-called men who raped women in Krugersdorp last week are human in form but animals in behaviour. There is no reason under the sun for any person to rape another, but for a gang of men to rape one woman is pure evil.

I have only seen animals behaving this way, because it is in animals' nature to do so. I am ill-equipped to rationalise what went through those men's heads when they gang-raped eight women one after the other. My problem, however, is the other angle to this story.

It is said that there were other women of the other race who were untouched. I am not saying they should have also been raped. Why do some men think black women are not worthy of our respect and love? In short, why do black people hate one another with such passion?

It is all in the day's work for South African Police Service to routinely investigate crime after it happens, particularly gender-based crime. Sometimes they arrest the perpetrators and other times they do not. Sometimes rape cases are successfully prosecuted but most times the police bungle investigations and rapists get away with these horrendous crimes.

The majority of policemen and women attending to crimes relating to black people are mostly black themselves. One would think that is enough reason to do proper investigations and make sure that perpetrators are successfully apprehended and prosecuted. But the opposite is true; the fact that victims of these crimes are inherently black and so are the investigators, these cases are not taken seriously by law enforcement agencies. Hence my question: why do black people hate one another with such passion?

We have recently seen a spike in tavern mass shootings, for instance. The victims are always black. Often no reasons were ever advanced as to the reasons for such brutal attacks. No one has to date been arrested at least in connection with Nomzamo settlement (Orlando East, Soweto) mass killings. The victims were all black, so why worry, life must go on, seem to be the attitude of law enforcement agencies.

The government must give us a clear explanation why we have the State Security Agency (SSA), whose function it is to uncover and assist the police arrest perpetrators of acts such as those mentioned above. Why does the government continue to waste scarce resources by keeping this useless agency at huge cost?

The Krugersdorp mass rapes would not have happened if members of SSA listened to the community when complaints about Amarashia emerged few years ago. The entire police around Krugersdorp had no idea that a group of people was setting the stage in nearby mine for a musical shoot.

For all we know, a group of terrorists might have set up a camp in Krugersdorp and unleashed terror against South African citizens, yet we have SSA and other law enforcement agencies. By the way, Zizi Kodwa is one of the top officials at the SSA and the majority of other officials are black people.

Why do black people hate one another with such passion, why?
