READER LETTER | Beacon of light in Diepsloot

Growing up in Diepsloot, Moses Makhadi has earned a Bachelor of Science Honours in Chemistry, marking a major milestone as the first person in his family to obtain a university degree. (supplied)

For a change, it is very refreshing to read about something honourable in the midst of very frustrating daily news. We‘re in a period where some people have lost interest in reading newspapers or listening to the news, let alone reading for a qualification.

Diepsloot, in the north of Joburg, is notorious for many reasons – high crime rate, poverty, and many other social problems. So, to read about Moses Makhadi passing a BSc honours degree in chemistry was uplifting. This young man from Diepsloot really defied all the odds to rise above his environmental obstacles. Moses deserves a big applause, as I’m sure he will be an inspiration to other young people. Thanks to NSFAS.

He seems like a determined, very focused person, as he intends to set a good example for his siblings as the eldest child in his family. He has tried to put his chemistry knowledge into practice, developing some ointment to help his mother with a serious case of eczema.

I wish him all the best. − Cometh Dube-Makholwa, Midrand
